This would be a two-star review except that we saw live manatees about 4 feet away from us in the harbor area. That made the price of admission worth it. Otherwise, I agree with another reviewer who said you're paying full price to see the whole estate, but you don't get to see the whole estate. The main piece of the estate is off-limits. They told us at the gate that the stone house is off-limits, so we figured a literal small stone house, maybe that's a tiny house like guest quarters somewhere else on the grounds. Another quiet, peaceful, and tranquil place just like The Barnacle. There is a Visitor Center that you can enter and learn about the Estate, the Rockland Pine Forest Ecosystem, and Biscayne Bay. The actual Estate was not open when we were there but the Rockland Pine Forest was viewable just south of the Visitor Center. There was a walkway down to Biscayne Bay and the Deering Estate People's Dock. This is the place to go if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Miami.
Deering Estate is an amazing piece of property started by Charles. It is quiet and peaceful and if you go now you may get to see Manatees, the people who work there are super nice and we happened to get luck and meet their amazing collection of reptiles thanks to Elias/Elijah/Isias not sure how to spell his name. Unfortunately the stone house is under renovation but don’t let that stop you from visiting. There is all sorts of wildlife and just tons to do. I believe a Ruth was at the ticket booth and she gave us great recomme... read more
This is a special place that I almost don't want to write about because it won't be a secret. If you have a chance, sign up for their sunrise events, which take place about 6 times a year. If you are lucky, you will see an amazing sunrise in an incredible setting. There will be plenty of wildlife there for people who like birds. Yes, sunrise means getting up early and paying in advance. Join their club to get notifications for when this event happens. I took several sunrise picture before, during and after that I shared bel... read more
I finally paid a visit to the Deering State. It’s a perfect activity to get disconnected from the busy city. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults but thanks to the Miami Dade Library Museum Pass, I was able to visit it for free. I enjoyed walking through the gardens, the Atlantic Ocean views and the architecture of the main building. All in all, a great activity for the whole family.
